History of EAN 13 Barcode Font EAN 13 is a superset of UPC Barcode and was introduced in 1977 by an EAN (European Article Number) association of EEC countries that included France, Germany, England, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Holland and Austria. In 1978, Japan and Spain joined. In 1989 Australia also joined . EAN-13 is used worldwide for marking retail goods. It encodes 13 characters: the first two to three digits are flag characters which represent a country code, followed by 10 data digits and a checksum.
Specification Each different country assigns country codes to the first two or three digits of the EAN 13 barcode number. The next 9-10 numbers of the manufacturer and item numbers.
ISSN with 2 or 5 digit supplements are used with EAN 13 barcode for various different applications of the EAN 13 symbology, such as ISBN, ISSN, ISMN barcodes
